Review
I love Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series and the Angels of the Dark series is a spin off.
I enjoyed Wicked Nights, the first book of the series, but the second, Beauty Awakened kind of lost me. Beauty Awakened started out strong but fell flat.

Koldo is a brooding angel with an unfortunate childhood. He is the son of an angel and what I am assuming is a demon…it wasn’t too clear as to what his father was, other than a heartless bastard. Koldo has some serious mommy issues, which is understandable. His mother hated him and tormented him, she even ripped his angel wings off when he was child. She then deposited him in his father’s war camp to be raised like a heathen. Needless to say, Koldo endured a lot of bad sh*t. His back story was just too much, he had a lot going on and the problems with his parents kept cropping up throughout Beauty Awakened, his father being the main “bad guy”. Koldo at one point even imprisons his mother for…what? He doesn’t torture her, but tortures himself with her presence and still behaves like a child that craves his mother’s love and approval. I felt that Koldo had too much going on in his personal life/past. There came a point when I thought, okay, he is brooding. I get!
Nicola and her twin have been ill since birth, both having weak hearts. Koldo first spies Nicola when he is sent to a hospital to kill a demon. He is captivated by her, but does nothing about the two demons that have attached themselves to her and the demon that has wormed its way inside her sister – killing her. However, after some time he reveals himself to Nicola (stepping out of the spiritual world) to save her by trying to change her attitude and outlook on life, which was bleak.
I did not feel the romance between the characters, but that could be due to the fact that there was so much going on. Koldo’s parents were troublesome, the demons that hung around Nicola were taxing, the…woman of confusing/unknown origin who worked with Nicola was bothersome, Nicola’s sister was annoying, and all the other side stories were distracting. The fact that the main characters didn’t even make it to the bed until 300 + pages left much to be desired.
I felt that Ms. Showalter used this book to set up the next few stories within the series. I was very interested in the side characters, like Thane, whose book is next – I’ve already bought it! Even though Beauty Awakened was slow and had a lot going on, I’m hooked and need to know what will happen next. I am going to stick the series, Ms. Showalter is a solid author.
